US elections: 6 days left What the polls say, what Harris and Trump are preparing | US Election News 2024
With just a week until the US election, Vice President Kamala Harris spoke to supporters from the Ellipse in Washington, DC, the location where her opponent and former President Donald Trump addressed supporters before the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
Meanwhile, Trump was in Allentown, Pennsylvania, just two days after a comedian made racist comments about Puerto Rico from the podium at his rally in New York, sparking a firestorm of criticism.
Six days before the November 5 vote, the two candidates, their running mates and their substitutes are working to consolidate their support before election day.
What are the latest poll updates?
According to the latest Reuters/Ipsos polls, Harris' lead over Trump narrowed in the final stretch of the election.
She holds a narrow one percentage point lead over Republicans, 44 percent to 43 percent, nationally, according to the poll. The poll had a margin of error of about three percentage points in either direction.
The poll also indicates that Harris' lead has steadily declined since late September. A previous Reuters/Ipsos poll from October 16-21 showed Harris leading Trump by two points.
A separate telephone and online poll by prominent US pollster Rasmussen suggests Harris faces a sympathy challenge. According to the survey, 47 percent of likely American voters view her favorably, and 33 percent have a very favorable view. However, 51 percent of them view it negatively and 44 percent have a very unfavorable impression.
National polls show Harris leading by 1.4 points according to the FiveThirtyEights poll, again well within the polls' margin of error.
In swing states, the key battlegrounds likely to determine the outcome of the election, the race remains even tighter.
These seven states include Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Georgia, Michigan, Arizona, Wisconsin, and Nevada.
FiveThirtyEights' daily poll tracking shows Harris maintaining a slim lead in Michigan and a razor-thin advantage in Nevada and Wisconsin. Meanwhile, Trump holds a slight advantage over Harris in Pennsylvania and more significant leads in North Carolina, Arizona and Georgia.
In all seven states, the candidates are within two points of each other, well within polling margins of error, leaving each state in contention just days before the final vote.
What was Kamala Harris doing on Sunday?
In what her campaign billed as a final appeal to voters, Harris delivered a speech from the Ellipse in Washington, DC.
Trump spent a decade trying to keep the American people divided and afraid of each other. That's who he is, but America, I'm here tonight to say that's not who we are, Harris said.
A campaign official said the crowd at Harris' rally exceeded 75,000 people, nearly four times initial estimates.
Harris also reminded the crowd that this was the place where Trump sought to overturn the will of the people on January 6, 2021. On that day, thousands of supporters of then-President Trump stormed the building in an effort to overturn his election defeat, forcing lawmakers to flee for safety.
Tonight I will talk to everyone about the choice and the issues in this election, Harris said. We know who Donald Trump is.
He was the one who stood in this very spot nearly four years ago and sent an armed mob to the United States Capitol to overturn the will of the people in a free and fair election.
Harris closed her speech by telling voters that they are not a vessel for the plans of would-be dictators.
The United States of America represents the greatest idea humanity has ever conceived, Harris said. In seven days, we have the power, each of you has the power, to turn the page and begin writing the next chapter of the most extraordinary story ever told, she added. Harris supporters in Washington, D.C., said they were feeling anxious with a week to go until Election Day.
I'm just ready for her to win, Bruce Purvis, 34, told Al Jazeera, adding that he thought the Democratic candidate did well and didn't just present herself as a counterpoint to Trump. I appreciate that she focused on the issues and not just her opponent's flaws, he said.
I care most about people. It was her focus on the middle class that sidelined her.

What was Donald Trump doing on Monday?
Trump kicked off his rally in Allentown, Pennsylvania, with a brief message to voters: Are you better off today than you were four years ago? The crowd responded with a big no.
I'm asking you to be excited again. They embarrassed us. Kamala embarrassed us. She doesn't have what it takes. I ask you to dream big again.
He urged his supporters to stand up and tell Kamala next Tuesday that you referenced how Trump would end episodes of his reality TV show, The Apprentice.
Throughout his speech in Allentown, Trump included rhetoric targeting immigrants, at one point saying the United States had become a giant trash bin where countries like Venezuela send their criminals. We will protect our men, our women and our country, he said.

We hear Donald Trump walk back his closing message, that Kamala essentially broke it [and] Donald Trump can fix it, Al Jazeera's Alan Fisher said from Allentown, Pennsylvania.
He went through a litany of things he thinks Harris is responsible for, including inflation and a border invasion and said it would all end on day one, Fisher added.
According to Fisher, Trump spoke to a crowd of 10,000 to 12,000 people, and when he addressed Harris' rally, Trump said that sometimes they bused them in, and when it was in video, they used artificial intelligence.

What's next for the Harris and Trump campaigns? Kamala Harris campaigns in North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin
Both Harris and Trump will travel to North Carolina, another battleground state, on Wednesday.
In North Carolina, Trump holds a significant advantage over Harris.
With less than a week until the election, Harris is focused on getting her message across in key states. In addition to North Carolina, she will visit Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
However, experts say some of his arguments may not be compelling enough to resonate with all audiences.
One of his key messages is that Trump's victory could pose a threat to democracy in the United States, and experts say that might not be convincing enough.
I don't think the argument that Trump is fascist and undemocratic will resonate with many voters. Looking at the data, most Americans prioritize other issues. About 60 to 70 percent of Americans think democracy is in danger in some way, but if you look at the issues they consider most important, which will determine their vote, less than 3 percent cite democracy, Thomas Gift, associate professor. in political science at the University College London School of Public Policy, told Al Jazeera.
If she wants to get decisive votes, she will have to appeal on the issue of abortion on which Democrats have a very considerable advantage, on the economy, somehow pushing back against Trump's accusations that the current administration is responsible of the cost. of the current crisis, on immigration to ensure that it can present convincing arguments, for example on how it will meet the challenges at the border, he added.
Trump, meanwhile, claimed Harris abandoned North Carolina families.
Trump will end this madness when he returns to the White House. He has a proven track record of economic success in his first term, and he will put more money in people's pockets as the 47th president of the United States, his website says.
He will also be in Wisconsin to hold a rally in Green Bay. Harris slightly leads Trump in the state, according to the poll.
