Erdoan hails Iraq's 'positive steps' in fight against PKK terrorist group
ISTANBUL
President Recep TayyipErdoan on Friday praised the Iraqi government's recent efforts against the PKK terrorist group, including officially declaring it illegal.
Erdoan expressed Ankara's satisfaction with these “positive steps” during a meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani in Istanbul, according to Trkiye's communications directorate.
The leaders' discussions at the Vahdettin Mansion focused on bilateral relations as well as regional and global issues.
Erdoane stressed that terrorist groups pose significant security threats to both Trkiye and Iraq and stressed that combating all forms of terrorism, without exception, would strengthen peace and stability in both countries.
During their more than 40-year terrorist campaign against Trkiye, the PKK classified as a terrorist organization by Trkiye, the US and the EU were responsible for the deaths of more than 40,000 people, including women, children and infants. The group is based in northern Iraq, near the Turkish border, in areas under the Kurdish regional government.
Stating that Trkiye and Iraq are neighboring countries with deep-rooted historical and cultural ties, Erdoa added that developing relations and evaluating cooperation opportunities, especially the development road project, would bring significant benefits to both countries and that they would continue to take the necessary measures with determination to this end.
Israeli aggression in the region
Erdoan also denounced growing Israeli aggression in the region, calling it a threat to both regional and world peace.
He stressed the need for solidarity, especially among countries in the region, to counter this threat and establish peace and stability, adding that Trkiye would continue its efforts for peace.
