President-elect Donald Trump won Arizona, according to NBC News, putting his 11 electoral votes in his column after narrowly losing the state to President Joe Biden in 2020.

Since then, the state once firmly controlled by the Republican Party has appointed a Democratic governor, two Democratic senators and other statewide elected officials. A rapidly growing Latino population and a revolt against Trump among some old-line Republicans put this once-red state in battleground territory. And Biden's 2020 victory in Arizona was only the second time in 28 years that Arizona's electoral votes went to the Democratic presidential candidate.

Yet many of these Democratic victories were achieved by razor-thin margins. Arizona was the nation's second-closest state in the 2020 presidential race, with Biden beating Trump by just 0.3 percentage points (10,457 votes).

The state then became the epicenter of Trump's post-election spread of unfounded conspiracy theories that the election was stolen from him, with state Republicans enthusiastically embracing the claims and some of those Republicans having failed statewide in the 2022 midterm elections.

Yet in the 2024 presidential race, polls in recent months have given Trump a slight edge over Harris in Arizona, although it generally remains within the margin of error. But while Trump's campaign, for the most part, was largely outmatched and overorganized in Arizona by Harris' campaign, Republicans saw a sharp increase in voter registrations heading into the election year. presidential election.

And the state was a perfect fit for the two issues at the center of Trump's campaign: the economy and immigration.

This summer, Arizona saw some of the highest gas prices in the country, and Harris and Trump both visited the Arizona-Mexico border during their visits to the state. Yet Arizona was one of the battlegrounds Trump visited the least, being geographically separated from most other battleground states.
