President-elect Donald Trump announced this evening that he will name billionaire Elon Musk and former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy to head a new Department of Government Effectiveness (DOGE) upon taking office in 2025. The acronym DOGE seems to be a reference to digital. the dogecoin currency, of which Musk is a fan.

These two wonderful Americans will lead the way for my administration to dismantle government bureaucracy, cut excessive regulations, cut wasteful spending, and restructure federal agencies, Trump said in his announcement.

The statement did not provide details on the nature of DOGE, but indicated that it would provide advice and guidance from outside government and would partner with the White House Office of Management and Budget .

In September, Trump announced he would create a government efficiency commission that Musk would lead. Musk has called for cutting $2 trillion in federal spending. In 2023, the government spent $1.7 billion in discretionary funds. On X, Musk has previously hinted at departments and areas he plans to cut, including the Department of Education and funding for National Public Radio.

Musk has been one of Trump's most ardent supporters. During the campaign, he invested nearly $200 million in his political action committee, America PAC, which he used to support Trump's campaign. He also appeared with him at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, and held town hall meetings across the state to drum up support for the former president.
