Erdoan says Turkey could cooperate with Musk on tech projects
President Recep Tayyip Erdoan said Turkey could cooperate with SpaceX and Tesla founder Elon Musk on technology projects if opportunities arise, as the businessman prepares to take a position within of the new American government, reported the official Anadolu news agency.
US President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday selected Musk and former Republican presidential candidate and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy to lead the new Department of Government Effectiveness for his new administration. Musk, one of the world's richest businessmen, has donated millions of dollars to Trump's presidential campaign.
“Musk is a businessman who works in space and technology. Technology is not an area where you can progress alone, you definitely need some cooperation. If opportunities for cooperation arise in this area, we can take steps with Musk,” Erdoan told reporters on a return flight from Baku on Wednesday.
Erdoan and Musk held a series of meetings in Türkiye and on the sidelines of international forums, apparently developing a friendship.
The last time they met was in September 2023, on the sidelines of the annual meeting of the UN General Assembly, at Turkish House in New York, a new skyscraper located opposite the UN building, with one of his sons, whom he held on his lap during the conversation with Erdoan.
Erdoan likes to promote Turkey's high-tech sector, which is arguably most famous for its Bayraktar combat drones.
Musks SpaceX has previously worked with the Turkish space industry, launching some of its communications satellites.
Musk, who also owns the social media platform X, has been harshly criticized by rights groups and journalists in Turkey and abroad for limiting their freedom of expression on of the Turkish government to block content or accounts. anti-government figures.
In another example of its compliance with the Turkish government's censorship demands, last month X blocked access to more than 100 accounts belonging to Turkish journalists, activists and media organizations run by journalists living in exile.
