There are many terrifying elements to the Trump agenda, and we plan to dedicate ourselves to reporting in-depth on each of them and, most importantly, covering the movements that are resisting it. We also recognize that Trump poses a serious threat to journalism itself and that we need to take this seriously from the start.

After the election, the four of us sat down to have difficult but necessary conversations about Truthout under President Trump. How could we defend our publication against an avalanche of far-right lawsuits seeking to bankrupt us? How would we keep our journalists safe if they have to cover outbreaks of political violence or are targeted by authorities? How will we urgently produce the practical analysis, tools and movement coverage you need right now – breaking our normal routines to face a terrifying moment in the way that works best for you ?

It will be a difficult and scary four years producing journalism focused on social justice. We must offer information, strategies, liberating ideas, tools and solutions that spark movement with a force we have never had to do before. And at the same time, we must desperately protect our ability to achieve this.
