Ethiopia, Somalia agree to hold 'technical talks' on breakaway Somaliland region

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) Ethiopian and Somali leaders have agreed to hold technical talks to resolve a dispute sparked by the deal between Ethiopia and Somalia's breakaway region of Somaliland. A joint statement from the two countries was issued in Türkiye on Wednesday after the leaders held separate meetings with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. It says the parties agreed that negotiations would begin by February 2025 and conclude within four months. Tensions between the two African countries have eased since Ethiopia signed a deal with Somaliland in January to lease land along its coastline from landlocked Ethiopia for a naval base. In exchange, Ethiopia would recognize the independence of Somaliland, which Somalia says violates its sovereignty and territory.
