China commits to responding to Canada's sanctions over alleged rights abuses
(Bloomberg) — China condemned Canada's sanctions on eight Chinese officials for alleged human rights violations, opening a new crack in already tense bilateral relations.
The Chinese embassy in Ottawa called Canada's actions truly egregious and pledged to respond. China will take resolute measures to safeguard its national sovereignty, security and development rights and interests, the embassy said in a message posted Wednesday morning on social media Weibo.
The Canadian government announced new sanctions against former and current Chinese personnel on Tuesday, citing concerns about rights abuses across China in a statement to mark International Human Rights Day.
Canada is deeply concerned about human rights violations in Xinjiang and Tibet and against those who practice Falun Gong, said Canadian Foreign Minister Mlanie Joly.
