Donald Trump Jr. and his girlfriend, Bettina Anderson, could lead the way.

An insider tells PEOPLE that President-elect Donald Trump's latest move to nominate Kimberly Guilfoyle, his eldest son's longtime fiancée, as U.S. ambassador to Greece appears to be part of a plan to to remove her from the scene.

Bettina wants Kim to leave the region, a political source tells PEOPLE.

They are trying to send Kim abroad, the source adds. They waited for the election to happen, but they didn't want the split to stand in the way of something that could hurt Donald in the election.

The older Trump, 78, announced Guilfoyle's nomination on Truth Social on Dec. 10, saying he chose the Fox News host who has been engaged to Don Jr. since 2020 for the role because she was “a close friend and ally”. for “many years”. The president-elect also said she was “perfectly suited” to foster “strong bilateral relations with Greece.”

“Her extensive experience and leadership in law, media and politics, as well as her keen intellect, make her extremely qualified to represent the United States and safeguard its interests abroad,” he said.

The ambassadorship appointment came a day after Don Jr., 46, was photographed holding hands with Anderson, 38, during an evening stroll around Palm Beach, Fla., in photos obtained by Daily Mail. The outlet reports that the two were celebrating Anderson's birthday.

PEOPLE attempted to reach Don Jr., Anderson and Guilfoyle for comment on the state of their relationship and requested comment from President-elect Trump on the timing of the nomination.

Don Jr. has yet to make any announcements regarding his engagement to Guilfoyle, although sources told PEOPLE in September that the two have reportedly spent a lot of time apart.

Trump and Guilfoyle began dating in early 2018 after knowing each other for years and became engaged in 2020. However, they did not publicly reveal the news until two years later.

Guilfoyle, who was previously married to California Governor Gavin Newsom, previously opened up about their relationship during a 2021 appearance on Successful Philanthropy, saying, “We are truly a team, we support each other, we were best friends.

“We have great conversations and lots of laughs together. It's great, we have such a strong relationship. It's never wavered and I feel really lucky to be a part of it,” she added.
