Kari Lake is not Trump's choice for ambassador to Mexico

PHOENIX If Arizona's Kari Lake gets a job in President-elect Donald Trump's new administration, it won't be ambassador to Mexico.

Trump announced Tuesday evening that he was nominating Ronald Johnson as ambassador to Mexico. Johnson, an Army veteran with CIA experience, served as ambassador to El Salvador during Trump's first term.

Ron will work closely with our leading candidate for Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, to promote the security and prosperity of our nations through strong, America First foreign policies, Trump said in an article by Truth Social.

The announcement came a day after Semafor, citing two anonymous sources familiar with the matter, reported that Lake was a leading candidate for Mexican ambassador.

On Tuesday afternoon, Lake appeared to mock the report in an article on X.

Why Kari Lake is considered a candidate for the Trump administration

Lake, a former local television news anchor, gained political prominence as a staunch supporter of Trump and his MAGA movement.

She is a star of the Trump wing of the Republican Party, but has failed to make it an electoral success in Arizona.

Trump supported Lake when she won the GOP nominations for governor in 2022 and a U.S. Senate seat this year, but she lost to her Democratic opponents in both general elections.

Lake's fierce loyalty fueled speculation that Trump would find a place for her in his administration after winning back the White House.

What's next for Kari Lake?

Lake did not address her future in a video she posted last month after losing to U.S. Rep. Ruben Gallego in the race for Sen. Kyrsten Sinema's seat.

However, she thanked her supporters and praised Trump's return to power.
