Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife indicted in another corruption case, reports Geo TV

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) – A Pakistani court on Thursday indicted former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife on new charges of illegally selling state gifts, local television channel Geo reported.

The indictment is the latest in a series of dozens of prosecutions against the 72-year-old former cricket star, who has been jailed since late last year.

Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi have already been released on bail in the case, which is part of a series of charges against the Treasury known as the “Toshakhana”.

The charges revolve around allegations that Khan and his wife illegally bought and then sold gifts worth more than 140 million rupees ($501,000) in state possession, which he allegedly received during of his term as Prime Minister from 2018 to 2022. They denied committing any offense.

Both Khan and Bibi were sentenced to 14 years in prison on the charges days before national elections earlier this year, following a three-year sentence imposed on him in late 2023 in another version of the same deal.

However, their sentences were suspended on appeal to the High Court.

The gifts included diamond jewelry and seven watches, including six Rolexes – the most expensive valued at 85 million rupees ($305,000).

Earlier this month, Khan was also charged with inciting attacks against the military, a case stemming from deadly anti-government rallies led by his party last year.

Bibi also led a deadly protest march bringing together thousands of supporters in the capital Islamabad on November 25, intensifying the confrontation with the government and its military backers.

Khan has been pursuing legal cases since he was ousted from power in 2022. He and his party say the cases were concocted to keep him out of politics at the behest of the military, after he fell out with the army generals. The army denies this accusation.
