RAWALPINDI: A special court in Islamabad on Thursday indicted Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder-chairman Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi in the fresh Toshakhana case, also known as the Toshakhana case jewelry sets.

Central Judge Shahrukh Arjumand of Special Court Central-I, who presided over the hearing at Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail, framed the charges against Khan and Bushra.

The case was initially filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB). However, in light of the NAB amendments, the Federal Investigation Agency took up the case and filed its complaint in September this year.

The couple was granted bail in the case. But if the former first lady is still not in prison, her husband is still behind bars in other cases brought against him.

The duo, accused of causing losses to the exchequer by illegally selling and retaining state gifts, were arrested in the case on July 13, the same day they were acquitted in the iddats case .

In October, the former first lady, after spending months behind bars, was finally released after the Islamabad High Court (IHC) approved her bail plea following her arrest in the said case.

Meanwhile, in November, the IHC also granted bail to the incarcerated former prime minister.

However, Khan and Bushra are not out of hot water as their legal woes are unlikely to end anytime soon, with the ex-prime minister named in as many as 188 different cases.

While the PTI founder's wife also faces the risk of being jailed after the IHC, while hearing a case earlier today, said her bail may be revoked by the trial court due to her failure to attend hearings for which Justice Arujmand on December 5, she had already issued warrants for her arrest on bail.

The NAB reference

In its reference against Khan and Bushra, the accountability watchdog said the deputy military secretary asked the Toshakhana section officer to estimate and declare the price of the jewelry set. The set of jewelry, he clarified, was not left in Toshakhana.

The jewelry company sold the necklace for 300,000 and the earrings for 80,000 on May 25, 2018. Information regarding the price of the bracelet and ring could not be obtained from the company.

On May 28, 2021, the price of the set was estimated at Rs70.56 million; the price of the necklace was Rs50.64 million and the price of the earrings included in the jewelry was then estimated at Rs10.50 million.

According to the rules, the price of 50% of the jewelry set is around Rs35.28 million.

According to the reference, the PTI founder and his wife violated the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) order. He added that an investigation was initiated against the former first couple on the instructions of the NAB Chairman on August 1, 2022.
