NEW DELHI: Indian chess prodigy Gukesh Dommaraju, popularly known as D Gukeshachieved a monumental feat on Thursday by becoming the youngest world ecer chess champion at only 18 years old.
In a thrilling final match held in Singapore, Gukesh defeated the Chinese. Ding Lirendefending champion, in match 14 of their series, with a score of 7.56.5.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Gukesh, calling his achievement “historic and exemplary”.
“Historic and exemplary! Congratulations to Gukesh D on his remarkable achievement. It is the result of his unprecedented talent, hard work and unwavering determination. His triumph has not only etched his name in the annals of history of chess, but also inspired millions of young minds to dream big and strive for excellence,” PM Modi wrote on X.
President Droupadi Murmu also congratulated Gukesh, saying, “My heartiest congratulations to Gukesh for becoming the youngest player to win the title. World Chess Championship. The International Chess Federation confirmed Gukesh's status as the youngest world chess champion in history, surpassing Garry Kasparov, who won the title at age 22. Gukesh also became the second Indian, after five-time champion Viswanathan Anand, to win the title.
The decisive moment came when Ding, pressed for time, made an error in a final that seemed destined for a draw. Gukesh, with a rook, a bishop and the advantage of a pawn, tenaciously persevered, turning the game in his favor. Ding collapsed in despair as Gukesh, overcome with emotion, buried his face in his hands.
The fans erupted in joy, with many Indian fans chanting his name during the post-match press conference. Gukesh credited his aggressive strategy: “It only takes one match for the strategy to bear fruit.”
Born to a doctor and a microbiologist, Gukesh became India's youngest grandmaster at age 12. His meteoric rise includes victories over Fabiano Caruana and Magnus Carlsen.
