Donald Trump named Time magazine's Person of the Year
Donald Trump was named Time magazine's Person of the Year ahead of his second presidency.
The leader of the Republican Party was awarded this title for the second time, the first coming after his first presidential victory in 2016.
“All of us – from his most fanatical supporters to his most fervent critics – live in the age of Trump… [He] remade American politics in the process,” writes Time editor Sam Jacobs in a letter to readers.
“He won by broadening his base, capitalizing on frustration over rising prices, and benefiting from a global turn against incumbents…We now see members of Congress, international institutions, and world leaders coming together. align once again with his whims. The carousel of Trumpworld characters is spinning again. This time we know what to expect.
“For masterminding a comeback of historic proportions, for leading a once-in-a-generation political realignment, for reshaping the American presidency and changing America's role in the world, Donald Trump is the 2024 Person of the Year. Time.”
Trump comfortably defeated Democratic rival Kamala Harris to the White House in last month's election and will return to the Oval Office on Monday, January 20, 2025.
Time interviewed Trump for its Person of the Year feature, with the president-elect explaining how he took advantage of American anger to win the election, pardoning the January 6 insurgents “maybe within the first nine minutes” of his presidency, and his desire to use the army to round up and expel migrants.
He also calls the war between Russia and Ukraine more difficult to manage than the conflict in the Middle East, adding: “The number of dead young soldiers lying in fields everywhere is staggering. It's crazy what's happening. He criticizes kyiv for launching US-made missiles at Russia, but says he will continue to support Ukraine in its search for a deal to end the conflict.
Trump has pledged to issue executive orders if his policies are blocked in Congress, telling Time: “If I have even one small problem…I'm going to issue an executive order because I can do it.” »
Asked whether he would agree to end childhood vaccination programs if Robert Kennedy Jr., his choice to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, sought to do so, Trump replied: “We let's have a big discussion. Autism rates are reaching levels no one ever thought possible. If you look at what's happening, there's something that's causing it. »
Scientific studies have repeatedly found no evidence that vaccines cause autism, according to FactCheck.org.
Trump also seemed less confident that he could lower food prices, with inflation a prominent campaign theme. “It’s hard to knock things down once they’re in place… You know, it’s very difficult,” he said.
Asked if he would roll back the Biden administration's protections for transgender children, Trump responded: “I'm going to look at it very closely.” We're looking at it right now. We'll watch it. We will watch everything. Look, the country is torn apart. We will watch everything.
Trump's campaign spent huge sums on ads attacking Kamala Harris for her support of transgender rights, but during the 2016 campaign, Trump said transgender people could use any bathroom they wanted. When asked about it by Time, Trump said in the Person of the Year interview: “I don't want to get into the bathroom issue. Because we are talking about a very small number of people and our country is torn apart, so they will have to settle what will ultimately be decided by law.”
Time also named Caitlin Clark Athlete of the Year, Lisa Su CEO of the Year and Elton John Icon of the Year.
Trump was in New York this morning and rang the opening bell of the New York Stock Exchange.
“Receiving this honor for the second time, I think I prefer this time, actually,” Trump said, standing in front of the magazine cover.
“The media has calmed down a little. They like us a lot better now, I think. If they don't, we'll have to take them back. And we don't want to do that. He praised “the whole Time group” as “very professional people.”
Time has traditionally emphasized that the Person of the Year honor is not an award, since past selections have included Adolf Hitler and Ayatollah Khomeini.
