Türkiye: a slight majority of Turks consider the fall of the Assad dynasty to be positive

A recent poll in Türkiye found that a majority of the country's population is satisfied with the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad in Syria.

Just over 51 percent of respondents said they were satisfied with the collapse of the Assad dynasty, while 27 percent expressed neutrality on the issue.

The survey was carried out by Stracom, a research and consulting firm, between December 8 and 11.

Since the start of the Syrian civil war, the Turkish government, led by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has been one of the main supporters of the Syrian opposition, which has spent nearly 14 years trying to overthrow Assad.

In contrast, the Turkish opposition has periodically urged the president to engage with Assad to resolve the Syrian crisis.

One of the most pressing problems for Turkish society is the presence of more than three million Syrian refugees, whom Turkey has hosted for more than a decade.

Despite considerable pressure from his party and electorate, Erdogan stood with refugees ahead of critical May 2023 presidential elections, saying he would not forcefully send them back.

However, since last year, Turkey's new Interior Minister, Ali Yerlikaya, has sporadically deported Syrians to Turkish-controlled areas in northern Syria in an effort to reduce their numbers.

The poll found that 61 percent of participants believe Syrian refugees would return home now that Assad has been toppled.

Last week, Yerlikaya mentioned that the number of Syrians leaving Turkey had doubled since Assad's fall, while Ankara had opened a new border gate at Hatay to speed up the return of refugees.

Many analysts credit Erdogan as a central player in toppling Assad.

However, only 43% of those surveyed attribute this success to Erdogan.

Ceren Kenar, founder and chief executive of Stracom, said Erdogan could use Assad's fall to his advantage in domestic politics, given that a majority perceive him to have succeeded in this regard.

The poll also highlighted regional concerns. More than a third of participants expressed concern about a potential increase in Israeli influence in the region after Assad's fall, while more than 43 percent indicated they were undecided on the subject. .

Some interviewees fear that Israel could exploit the situation in Syria and expand its influence in the region, Kenar told Middle East Eye.

This feeling is particularly pronounced, even among those who view the fall of regimes positively.

Kenar also noted that Assad's fall has raised new hopes for the soon return of Syrian refugees.

If this does not happen within a short period of time, it could further exacerbate tensions within Turkish society, she added.
