Donald Trump supports ILA's leadership in the fight against port automation
President-elect Donald Trump has joined leaders of the International Longshoremen's Association to support the union's fight against automation at U.S. ports. The new president issued a statement supporting union leaders in their contract negotiations with international shipping lines and terminal operators and the current impasse over automation.
One month before the new deadline set by the contract extension as part of the October strike settlement, the debate over automation and its role in ports on the East Coast of the United States and the Gulf Coast continues to intensify. The ILA took a strong stance against automation or semi-automation and blamed the U.S. Maritime Alliance's attempt to expand the use of semi-automated rail-mounted gantry cranes (RMS) for causing the failure negotiations on the framework contract.
Trump, in a post on his Truth social media site, wrote: “I have studied automation and know just about everything there is to know about it. The amount of money saved does not come close to equaling the distress, suffering and harm it causes to American workers, in this case our longshoremen. He wrote this after meeting with ILA President Harold Daggett and Executive Vice President Dennis Daggett and posted a photo with union leaders.
Trump concluded by saying of the USMX and the shipping companies: “I hope they understand how important an issue this is to me. »
The union reiterated its intention to strike a second time if there is no agreement before the contract expires on January 15, 2025. This would come just five days before Trump's inauguration and threaten to impact the planned agenda of the new president, whose campaign focused on improving the American economy.
The USMX quickly responded to Trump's message, saying it looked forward to working with the new president and his administration. The USMX also faced pressure from the Biden administration during the October strike, with President Joe Biden, Acting Labor Secretary Julie Su and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg all pushing for raises significant salary increases for longshoremen. The ILA and USMX agreed to a 61 percent salary increase for the new six-year contract, but left automation up in the air.
“This contract goes beyond our ports – it aims to support American consumers and give American businesses access to the global market – from farmers to manufacturers, small businesses and innovative start-ups seeking new markets to sell their products,” USMX said. a statement this evening in response to Trump and the ILA. “To achieve this, we need modern technology that is proven to improve worker safety, increase port efficiency, increase port capacity and strengthen our supply chains. ILA members' pay increases the more goods they move – the more capacity our ports have and the goods moved means more money in their pockets.
Earlier this week, the ILA's Dennis Dagget called media reporting on port automation and efficiency “inaccurate and irresponsible.” In a lengthy message posted online, he says U.S. ports are among the most efficient in the world and handle some of the highest volumes of cargo. He criticizes the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence survey for comparing full-service U.S. ports with transshipment ports.
“The scale and complexity of these operations far exceed those of most transshipment ports,” Daggett writes. He says the World Bank uses criteria such as turnaround times that do not take into account the challenges of customs clearance, the movement of containers between ships and other modes of transport, and security and compliance protocols. security required by American law. “Ignoring these facts distorts assessments of effectiveness,” says Daggett.
“The ILA and its members are ready and willing to participate in this progress, especially when it comes to adopting technology that promotes efficiency without replacing the critical role of a human performing this task. However, we will not tolerate reckless depreciations of our industry and our work,” Daggett wrote.
He also discusses the impact of dilapidated infrastructure on American ports. He says of things like highways, bridges, rail systems and dredging operations: “These critical connections to ports are decades behind the needs of modern commerce.”
The USMX and ILA are at an impasse over the issue of automation and semi-automation, which the union says threatens to provoke another coast-wide strike. Harold Daggett calls it a fight for survival while the USMX says progress is needed to increase efficiency and advance safety while increasing the capacity of U.S. ports to meet global demand.
