Kremlin says it agrees with Trump's opposition to ATACMS strikes against Russia

The Kremlin said Friday that US President-elect Donald Trump's opposition to Ukraine's firing of US-supplied weapons deep into Russia was “fully consistent” with Moscow's position.

Trump said in an interview published Thursday that he “very vehemently” disagreed with Ukraine's use of ATACMS missiles to strike Russian territory.

The comments were welcomed by the Kremlin, which announced Friday it had launched a large-scale air attack on Ukraine's energy grid in response to kyiv's strike on an airfield with U.S.-supplied weapons this week.

“This statement fully corresponds to our position, our view on the reasons for the escalation,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters. “It’s obvious that Trump understands exactly what’s making the situation worse.”

Trump told Time Magazine that he thought it was a “foolish decision” to allow Ukraine to fire missiles “hundreds of miles into Russia.”

Moscow has repeatedly condemned the supply of Western weapons to Ukraine and said the use of these weapons made NATO countries direct participants in the war, which is approaching its third year.

Trump claimed on the campaign trail that he could reach a deal to end the fighting within 24 hours, and speculation about a possible ceasefire is growing as his inauguration in January approaches.

But the Kremlin said on Friday that its “preconditions” for holding peace negotiations with Ukraine had not yet been met.

“We don't want a ceasefire. We want peace once our conditions are met and all our goals are achieved,” Peskov told reporters.
