Turkey can intervene to resolve disputes between Sudan and the United Arab Emirates, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told the head of Sudan's Sovereign Council, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.

The Sudanese army, led by al-Burhan, accuses the United Arab Emirates of supplying weapons to its rival, the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF), and prolonging the war in Sudan. The UAE has rejected the allegations and accused the military of refusing to negotiate peace with its enemy.

Erdogan suggested in Friday's call that Turkey intervene to resolve disputes between Sudan and the United Arab Emirates, just as it mediated a dispute between Somalia and Ethiopia, neighbors in the Horn of Africa. Africa, declared the Turkish presidency in a press release without further details.

Sudan has been mired in war since mid-April 2023, when long-simmering tensions between its military and paramilitary leaders erupted in the capital, Khartoum, and spread to Darfur and other regions.

More than 13 million people have been forced to flee their homes since the start of the conflict.

Food insecurity

In war-torn Sudan, around 25 million people are facing severe food shortages and famine is being declared in the huge Zam Zam internally displaced persons camp in West Darfur.

In an interview Thursday with the Associated Press news agency, Carl Skau, head of the World Food Program (WFP), cited progress over the past month in obtaining the necessary authorizations to move aid through the lines of conflict and the border with Chad. And as roads dry out at the end of the rainy season, WFP is able to deliver much more food, Skau said.

One convoy reached Zam Zam and two others were en route but were blocked due to fighting over the past 10 days in El-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, Skau said.

It is the only capital of Darfur still held by Sudanese forces. The others are detained by RSF.

WFP aid reached around 2.6 million people this month, Skau said, stressing that the international community should have done more to resolve the crisis in Sudan and must do more in the future.
