Trump hails Indiana schools as 'well-run', calls for shutdown of U.S. Department of Education

President-elect Donald Trump praised Indiana schools as “well-run” while reiterating his goal of transferring control of education from the federal government to individual states.

In an interview with Time magazine published Thursday, Trump reiterated his call for a “virtual shutdown” of the U.S. Department of Education, saying federal involvement has increased per-student costs while producing poor educational outcomes.

Trump offered few details on how the department's core responsibilities — such as upholding civil rights protections, distributing Title I funds to low-income students and people with disabilities, and administering federal student loans – would be managed if the department was abolished.

However, he cited Indiana and Iowa as examples of states that could thrive with reduced federal oversight and potentially compete globally with countries known for their strong education systems.

“When they run their own educational program, I think that will be the case, I think that they will be able to compete with anybody,” Trump said.

Closing the Department of Education would require congressional approval.

Indiana has long been seen as a leader in school choice by supporters of private school vouchers, scholarship tax credits and charter schools — initiatives that Trump has said want to expand.

Trump and members of his previous administration have repeatedly recognized Indiana's education system. Former Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos highlighted the Indianapolis Public Schools and, during her tenure, traveled to the state several times to visit school districts, schools in charter, private schools, and a coding program at a juvenile correctional facility.

Indiana schools received about $252 million in federal Title I funding last school year, according to state data.

What did Trump say?

Trump was recognized for the second time by Time magazine as Person of the Year. During an interview with Time reporters in Palm Beach, Fla., on Nov. 25, Trump was asked about his education plans and other goals for his second term as president. The full interview was published Thursday.

Time: What does returning to the United States mean? Does this mean closing the Ministry of Education?

Trump: a virtual closure of the Department of Education in Washington.

Time: Virtual closing?

Trump: Well, you're going to need some people just to make sure they're teaching English in the schools. Okay, you know English and math, let's say. But we want to bring education back to the states. If you look at the states, if you look at some individual countries, Norway is a very strong, but numerous, educational country. I think of Iowa, Indiana and a lot of these states that are well run. We have many that are very well managed. When they run their own educational program, I think that will be the case, I think they will be able to compete with anyone. Then you're going to have poorly run states, like a guy like Gavin Newscum [sic] in California, where he does a bad job, and he will, but even in California, you'll give it to Riverside. You'll give it, you know, you'll give it to areas in California where I think they'll run a great school program.

Indiana faces challenges related to several key education benchmarks for elementary and secondary students. Earlier this year, 82.5 percent of third graders in public and private schools passed the state reading test. Meanwhile, only 53 percent of high school graduates enrolled in college.

In 2022, Indiana students performed near the national average in reading and above the national average in mathematics, according to the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), commonly known as “the nation's report card.” .

The next set of NAEP results is expected in early 2025.
