Blinken asks Erdoan to protect Syrian civilians
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken told Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoan on Thursday that Syrian civilians must be protected after the overthrow of the Damascus government by Ankara-backed Islamists, Agence France-Presse reported.
America's top diplomat met for more than an hour with Erdoan on Thursday evening in an airport lounge in the capital Ankara, moments after the Turkish leader ousted Hungary's nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
Blinken “reiterated the importance for all actors in Syria to respect human rights, uphold international humanitarian law, and take all possible measures to protect civilians, including members of minority groups,” State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said in a statement.
Turkey has highlighted its security concerns following unrest in Syria, where it is fighting a Kurdish-led force that Washington supports as a key player in the fight against jihadists from the Islamic State (IS) group.
After years of stalemate, the Islamist Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) movement group last weekend overthrew iron-fisted leader Bashar al-Assad, a secular member of the minority Alawite community.
Blinken told Erdoan “the need to ensure that the coalition defeats ISIS.” [Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant] can continue to execute its critical mission,” Miller said.
Speaking before departing for Turkey during a stopover in Jordan, Blinken acknowledged Turkey's “real and clear interests” regarding the banned Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), the Kurdish fighters that Ankara links to the Syrian Kurdish activists.
“At the same time, again, we want to avoid triggering any sort of additional conflicts inside Syria,” Blinken told reporters in Aqaba, Jordan.
“And part of it is also ensuring that ISIS no longer raises its ugly head. And the so-called SDF, the Syrian Democratic Forces, which we support are essential to ensuring that this does not happen,” he said, referring to the Kurdish-led forces.
Blinken, who will leave office next month after Donald Trump's election victory, called for an “inclusive” process to form the next Syrian government, with respect for all communities.
