President-elect Donald Trump on mysterious drone sightings in the United States
Washington:
United States President-elect Donald Trump has called for “shooting down” the mysterious drones that are appearing in various parts of the country.
These drones were first spotted in New Jersey a few days ago and are now being seen in other areas as well.
The federal government and the White House have so far maintained that these measures pose no threat to national security and that there is no evidence of a foreign hand in this area. The appearance of these mysterious drones, however, continues to be the subject of investigations.
“Mysterious drone sightings all over the country. Can this really be happening without our government knowing? I don't think so,” Trump said Friday in a post on Truth Social, a social media platform he owns .
“Let the public know, and now. Otherwise, shoot them!!! DJT,” he said with his personal signature at the end of the message.
The White House said Thursday that there is no evidence at this time that the reported drone sightings pose a threat to national security or public safety or that they have a foreign nexus.
The Department of Homeland Security and the FBI are investigating the sightings, working closely with state and local law enforcement to provide resources, using numerous detection methods to better understand their origin, he told reporters. John Kirby, White House national security communications adviser.
He added that “…upon review of the available footage, it appears that many of the reported sightings actually involve manned aircraft that are legally operated.” “The United States Coast Guard is supporting the State of New Jersey and has confirmed that there is no evidence of any involvement of foreign-based coastal vessels. And, most importantly, no drone sightings have been reported or confirmed in restricted airspace,” Kirby said.
In a joint statement, the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI also said there is no evidence at this time that the reported drone sightings pose a threat to national security or public safety or have any connection with foreign countries.
“We support local New Jersey law enforcement with numerous detection methods, but we have not corroborated any of the reported visual sightings with electronic detection. Rather, upon review of available footage, it appears that many “reported sightings are actually manned aircraft, operating legally, no drone sightings have been reported or confirmed in restricted airspace,” the statement said.
In a letter to DHS, the FBI and the Federal Aviation Administration, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senators Cory Booker and Andy Kim said that “since late November, communities across the New York region and northern New Jersey have reported several incidents of unattributable drone sightings at night, alarming both residents and local law enforcement.
They stressed that “the potential safety and security risks posed by these drones in civilian areas are particularly relevant given recent drone incursions on sensitive military sites inside and outside the continental area.” of the United States during the past year.
Congressman Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey on Friday urged federal law enforcement, led by the FBI and DHS, to allow state and local law enforcement to deploy assets capable of safely killing drones that “should not be in our sky”.
He wrote a letter to the FBI, DHS and FAA, asking them to notify the public immediately.
“They also need to work closely with state and local law enforcement to provide them with the equipment they need to monitor drone activity. There are clearly too many here in Jersey and other regions of the country,” Gottheimer said.
