Tehreek-e-Insaf delays negotiations with Pakistani government while waiting for green light from Imran Khan

Islamabad [Pakistan]: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Friday reversed its earlier stance on holding talks with the government, with several party leaders saying formal dialogue was yet to begin, The Express Tribune reported.

Tehreek-e-Insaf leaders said the process would begin only after party founder Imran Khan gives the go-ahead.

Meanwhile, senior Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Rana Sanaullah said the government has not received any official communication from Tehreek-e-Insaf regarding initiating talks despite claims of Imran Khan's party that he would establish a negotiating committee for this purpose. ,

Criticizing Imran Khan's party's mixed messages and its historical preference for negotiations with the establishment rather than civilian leaders, Sanaullah said: “The PTI's position towards the government still seems to be the same: 'Why should we engage in discussions with you?'

On December 11, the ruling PML-N and PTI agreed to open formal communication channels – a move aimed at replacing confrontation with constructive dialogue, resolving long-standing issues and seeking to steady the ship political stability, The Express Tribune reported. The decision by the two parties came after PTI chief Asad Qaiser and Salman Akram Raja met National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq to offer condolences over the death of his sister.

The outgoing and former presidents of the National Assembly agreed that it was time to think together. They had proposed creating committees to deal with issues in Parliament that have repeatedly created a divide between the two parties. On the same day, PTI Chairman Barr Gohar had expressed readiness to hold talks through Parliament and stressed that the offer of talks should not be seen as weakness.

Responding to the PTI leader's statement, Pakistan's Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar called it encouraging to see the opposition using Parliament to discuss issues rather than for confrontation, The Express Tribune reported.

While speaking in the National Assembly on Friday, Qaiser reversed his earlier stance, saying he had only addressed the Speaker of the National Assembly to offer his condolences. He said negotiations would begin only when the PTI founder gives the green signal.

Apart from Imran Khan's approval, he said the PTI negotiating committee would begin when the government felt like sitting at the table, The Express Tribune reported.

Qaiser said: “Since yesterday there has been talk of dialogue and negotiations in the media.” He said, “I only went to the President to propose Fateha.” He said: “I want to make it clear that these reports are false. A committee has been formed. Talks will take place when the government agrees.”

In his speech, he questioned why there was open firing on November 26 when his party was protesting in Islamabad's Blue Zone.

Speaking to reporters in Rawalpindi, the Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly clarified that no talks had yet started between the government and the PTI, reiterating that PTI members had met the President of the National Assembly to offer their condolences.

Speaking to a private media outlet, PTI leader Sher Afzal Marwat said no formal negotiations have started yet. He, however, said it would have been better if both sides had sat around the table before December 15, otherwise the PTI would have followed Imran Khan's call to launch a civil disobedience movement.

Marwat said Imran Khan had only formed the committee but had not yet ordered it to start talks with the government, saying it was not the right time to start the dialogue as PTI workers were still under the shock of the consequences of November 26 and discussed with the government. this situation would demoralize party activists.

Responding to various statements made by PTI leaders, senior PML-N leader Senator Irfan Siddiqui on Friday said the PTI will have to abandon its deceptive approach if it wants to engage in serious negotiations, according to the report .

While warning the PTI against a deceptive approach, Siddiqui said, “PTI will have to decide whether it wants talks or civil disobedience.” In a statement shared on X, Siddiqui said the party was desperate to conduct negotiations with the ulterior motive of extracting concessions.

Irfan Siddiqui said that this party was simultaneously planning to launch civil disobedience with the sole aim of harming Pakistan, adding that negotiations and civil disobedience cannot go hand in hand. He said, “If PTI is serious in negotiations, it should not add new burdens on its shoulders. The previous burden is already enough.” (ANI)
