Imran Khan's civil disobedience deadline drags on in silence

Islamabad, December 14 (EFE).- Imprisoned former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has issued an ultimatum of civil disobedience that is expected to begin on Saturday if his demands are not met.

However, the deadline passed without his party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) clearly announcing when the movement would begin.

Khan had called on the government to set up a judicial commission to probe two incidents: the May 2023 riots and the deadly crackdown on PTI workers on November 26 in Islamabad.

He also demanded the release of political prisoners under trial.

Last month, Khans PTI announced a long march on Islamabad, calling for his release.

When thousands of protesters reached the capital, security forces launched a crackdown, killing at least a dozen people and injuring more than 100, according to PTI claims.

In response to the violence, the PTI declared Sunday a national and global day of mourning to honor what it called the martyrs of the Islamabad massacre.

We have been pushed to the limit. Our people are being shot directly when they peacefully protest. Even the data of our martyrs has been hidden. Many have disappeared, read a statement attributed to Khan on the PTIs X account.

Khan reiterated his call for civil disobedience but did not provide a clear timetable.

We have no choice but to launch a large-scale civil disobedience movement if our demands for an independent judicial commission comprising the highest judges and the release of political prisoners are not met, he said. -he declared in the message.

As part of the campaign, Khan outlined plans to reduce foreign remittances from overseas Pakistanis, the PTI's largest support base.

We urge state institutions to denounce and put an end to those who sow discord between the population and the army. We will not let our country collapse.

Khan, ousted from office in April 2022 after a fallout with the powerful military, has accused military leaders of orchestrating his removal through a parliamentary vote.
