A Pakistani anti-terrorism court on Saturday ordered the release of 38 people arrested in connection with last month's protests led by the party of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Police had arrested hundreds of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) supporters who participated in the November 26 protest, which included a march to the capital, Islamabad, and a planned sit-in.

On November 13, PTI founder Khan had made a final call for nationwide protests, demanding the restoration of PTI's electoral mandate, the release of detained party members and the annulment of the 26th Amendment which, according to him, had strengthened a dictatorial regime.

The PTI supporters reached the capital on November 27 after removing obstacles on the road, but the police launched an operation in the night and forced them to flee while more than 1,400 people were arrested in Islamabad and across the country. the neighboring city of Rawalpindi.

According to a report in the Dawn newspaper, Justice Abul Hasnat Mohammad Zulqarnain on Saturday presided over the hearing of 56 suspects who were produced in court after their identification was completed.

Police requested a 20-day pretrial detention for the suspects, which defense lawyer Ansar Kayani opposed, arguing that police had arrested the suspects at their home before the protest.

They don't want to get anything back from the suspects. Police have only completed their figures, Kayani said.

Rejecting the police request, the judge remanded 50 people in custody and released six others after having their handcuffs removed, ordering police not to arrest them again.

Separately, Geo News reported that Justice Zulqernain presided over a late night hearing for 32 people arrested during the PTI protest and produced for identification before the court.

The investigator requested a 30-day pretrial detention for the suspects, while defense lawyer Kiyani argued that police arrested innocent workers from their homes to meet quotas.

Judge Zulqarnain ordered the suspects' handcuffs removed in court and dismissed them from the cases. He sternly warned the police against any further arrests, saying: If the police do this again, I will have them handcuffed. The PTI's high-profile protest, aimed at securing Khan's release, had culminated in the party's hasty withdrawal following the government's midnight crackdown on protesters.
