Donald Trump awarded $15 million in ABC News defamation case
ABC News has agreed to pay US President-elect Donald Trump $15 million (12 million) to settle a defamation lawsuit after its star anchor falsely claimed he had been found “responsible for rape”.
George Stephanopoulos made these statements several times during an interview on March 10 of this year, while challenging a congresswoman over her support for Trump.
A jury in a civil case last year determined Trump was responsible for “sexual abuse,” which has a specific definition in New York law.
As part of Saturday's settlement, ABC will also release a statement expressing “regret” for Stephanopoulos' statements.
According to the settlement, ABC News will make $15 million as a charitable contribution to “a presidential foundation and museum to be established by or for the plaintiff, as presidents of the United States of America have established in the past “.
The network also agreed to pay $1 million toward Trump's legal fees.
As part of the settlement, the network will post an editor's note at the bottom of its March 10, 2024 online news article on the story.
It will say: “ABC News and George Stephanopoulos regret statements regarding President Donald J. Trump made during an interview George Stephanopoulos with Representative Nancy Mace on ABC's This Week on March 10, 2024.”
An ABC News spokesperson said in a statement that the company was “pleased that the parties have reached an agreement to dismiss the lawsuit under the terms of the court filing.”
In 2023, a New York civil court ruled that Trump sexually abused E. Jean Carroll in a department store dressing room in 1996. He was also convicted of defamation against the magazine columnist.
Justice Lewis Kaplan said the jury's conclusion was that Ms. Carroll failed to prove that Trump raped her “in the narrow and technical sense of a particular section of New York criminal law.”
Justice Kaplan noted that the definition of rape was “much narrower” than the definition of rape in common, modern parlance, in some dictionaries, and in other criminal statutes.
In another case, also presided over by the same judge, a jury ordered Trump to pay Ms. Carroll $83.3 million for additional defamatory statements.
On the March 10 show, Stephanopoulos asked South Carolina Republican Rep. Nancy Mace how she could support Trump.
The presenter falsely stated that “judges and two separate juries found him responsible for rape.”
Stephanopoulos repeated this statement 10 times throughout the show.
Before the ruling, a federal judge ordered Trump and Stephanopoulos to testify under oath during their depositions next week.
Trump also sued CBS, the BBC's US broadcast partner, for “misleading conduct” following an interview with Kamala Harris.
In 2023, a judge dismissed his defamation lawsuit against CNN, in which he claimed that the network had compared him to Adolf Hitler.
He also saw lawsuits filed against the New York Times and the Washington Post dismissed.
