ABC to pay $15 million legal settlement in Trump defamation case

ABC to pay million legal settlement in Trump defamation case

WASHINGTON ABC will pay $15 million in a legal settlement with President-elect Donald Trump, closing a dispute centered on an interview in which Trump's alleged anchor, George Stephanopoulos, defamed him.

The money will be transferred to “a presidential foundation and museum to be established by or for” Trump, according to the terms of the settlement, published Saturday.

The defendants, identified by the settlement as ABC, ABC News and Stephanopoulos, will also pay $1 million to Trump's lawyer and add a note to an online article about the interview saying they “regret the statements” concerning Trump, according to the regulations.

“We are pleased that the parties have reached an agreement to dismiss the lawsuit under the terms of the court filing,” an ABC News spokesperson said in an email when reached for comment.

When reached for comment, Trump communications director Steven Cheung referred to the NBC News filing.

Trump's lawyers had filed the lawsuit days after Stephanopoulos interviewed Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., on the network, arguing that certain statements the anchor made were “false and defamatory.”

In the original complaint, Trump's lawyers alleged that Stephanopoulos knowingly or recklessly made several false and derogatory statements about the plaintiff during ABC broadcasts.

Mace, who has publicly discussed being raped as a teenager, was asked during the March interview with Stephanopoulos about Trump's treatment of women and the E. Jean Carroll affair.

Stephanopoulos said during the interview that Trump “was found guilty of rape by a jury.” Trump, however, was found liable in a civil case for sexually abusing Carroll, and not liable for her alleged rape. The nine-member jury in that case checked the “no” box when asked whether Carroll had proven by a preponderance of the evidence that Mr. Trump raped Ms. Carroll.

Trump has consistently denied Carroll's claims.

On Friday, before the settlement, a judge ordered that Trump and Stephanopoulos be available for depositions next week regarding the case.

Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily.
