No preconditions for negotiations, just clear demands: lawyer Gohar

A day after PTI chief Asad Qaiser said talks with the government would begin only after meeting three key demands, party president Barrister Gohar Khan on Saturday reiterated that no conditions a prerequisite had not been laid for the dialogue.

He maintained that demands, including the release of incarcerated PTI founder Imran Khan, had indeed been raised.

Speaking to the media outside the district courts, Barrister Gohar reiterated that Imran Khan has always supported negotiations as the way forward, adding that political issues deserve political dialogue to be resolved.

He lamented that previous, promising negotiations had been abruptly interrupted.

The PTI lawyer also denounced the government's heavy-handed response to the November 26 protests at D-Chowk. “In many cases around the world, protests do not result in violence, much less gunfire. In our case, the tear gas shooting began before the protesters were even fully assembled.”

Barrister Gohar, who is the lawyer of the incarcerated party founder, also revealed that the PTI had filed a petition seeking Imran's release from the May 9 case, terming the allegations as baseless.

“All fabricated charges against Imran Khan will lead to his eventual acquittal,” he added.

It is noteworthy that on Friday, Asad Qaiser clarified that the PTI is yet to start a dialogue with the government, saying the talks could only take place after three demands are accepted: release of Imran Khan and other party activists detained and the formation of a judicial commission composed of senior judges of the Supreme Court to investigate the May 9 riots and the November 26 repression.

Achakzai calls for dialogue

Meanwhile, Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) Chairman Mahmood Khan Achakzai has called on the PTI to delay its planned civil disobedience movement and prioritize dialogue with the government.

Speaking to a private news channel on Saturday, Achakzai, who heads the opposition alliance Tehreek Tahafuz Ayeen-e-Pakistan (TTAP), stressed the importance of finding a political solution to the country's challenges.

“If the issues can be resolved through dialogue, there is nothing better than that. However, if the talks fail, the movement will have to continue,” he said, urging both sides to focus on a clear roadmap to resolve political tensions.

Achakzai proposed elections within four months as a potential outcome of successful negotiations and announced plans to visit Peshawar to offer prayers for PTI martyrs and victims of the violence in Kurram.
