PM Modi slams Congress over Emergency, says 'this sin on the front of…'
Referring to the Nehru-Gandhi family, Prime Minister Modi said they “challenged the Constitution at every level”.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday slammed the Congress over the Emergency and said whenever democracy is discussed, “this very sin” of the Congress will be remembered. Speaking in Lok Sabha during the discussion on the 'glorious 75-year journey of the Constitution of India', the Prime Minister launched a scathing attack on the Congress and said that 'a Congress family does not spared no effort to strike a blow against the Constitution.”
Prime Minister Modi said that when India was celebrating 25 years of the Constitution, it “was torn up” and a state of emergency was imposed.
“It has been 75 years of the Constitution. But 25 years also have significance, just like 50 years and 60 years… While the country was witnessing 25 years of the Constitution, at the same time the Constitution of our country was razed. Emergency was imposed, democratic systems were ended, the country was turned into a prison, citizens' rights were plundered and freedom of the press was curtailed. This sin on the Congress front can never be. deleted every time that democracy will be discussed across the world, the Congress sin will never be erased because democracy has been stifled,” PM Modi said.
The state of emergency was imposed on June 25, 1975 by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Referring to the Nehru-Gandhi family, Prime Minister Modi said they “challenged the Constitution at every level”.
“There have been ups and downs, there have also been difficulties, there have also been obstacles. But I bow once again to the people of the country to say that they have strongly supported the Constitution…I don't want to make personal criticism to anyone, but it is important to present the facts to the country. That's why I would like to do it,” he said.
“A Congress family has spared no effort to strike a blow to the Constitution. I mention this family because in 75 years of our journey, they have governed for 55 years. So the country has a right to know what happened. “This family’s tradition of bad thinking and bad policies continues continually. This family challenged the Constitution at every level,” he said.
The two-day special debate in Lok Sabha on 75 years of the Constitution concluded on Saturday.
