UK and Australia to reaffirm commitment to defense pact at meeting in London
(Bloomberg) — Britain and Australia plan to underline their commitment to maintaining a defense pact with the United States at a meeting Monday, amid concerns over President-elect Donald Trump's commitment towards the agreement.
David Lammy, the British Foreign Secretary, and John Healey, the British Defense Secretary, will welcome their Australian counterparts to London for the annual meeting, known as AUKMIN. Although it was planned well before last month's US elections, both countries intend to underline their unwavering commitment to Aukus, named after Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States.
Under the Aukus agreement signed in 2021, the three countries committed to delivering a fleet of nuclear-powered submarines to Australia by the 2030s to counter China's submarine presence in the Indo-Pacific region. The agreement represents one of the most strategically important collaborations in decades, the British government said in a press release on Sunday.
Uncertainty over Trump's approach to Aukus is largely based on his promise to cut government spending, as well as fears that he may seek to change the terms negotiated by the current president , Joe Biden.
Still, Trump's hawkish approach to China could push him to want to focus more on the deal, according to Bloomberg Intelligence.
In June, former Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, who signed the deal with Biden and Britain's Boris Johnson, said Trump had expressed a positive view of the Aukus pact during a visit to the United States. United in May.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer will be in Norway on Monday to announce plans to strike a green energy deal with the country before attending a defense summit in Estonia.
