Mary Trump issues 'doomed' warning after big legal victory for Donald Trump
Mary Trump, Donald Trump's ex-niece, warned Saturday that “we are doomed” after the president-elect's defamation lawsuit against ABC News was settled.
ABC News agreed Saturday to pay $15 million for Trump's presidential library and issue a public apology to settle a defamation lawsuit over inaccurate statements made by anchor George Stephanopoulos on a show earlier this year.
Trump filed a defamation suit after Stephanopoulos claimed during a March 10 segment of ABC News' This Week while interviewing Rep. Nancy Mace, a South Carolina Republican, that Trump had been “recognized responsible for rape” in relation to the writer E. Jean Carroll and her. proceedings against him. In May 2023, a New York civil jury found Trump responsible for sexually abusing Carroll and then defaming her character while denying that the assault had occurred, but not for raping her.
Last year, Trump was ordered to pay $5 million to Carroll and, in January, ordered to pay him $83.3 million for additional defamation suits. The president-elect is appealing both verdicts.
Meanwhile, the terms of Saturday's settlement require ABC News to post a notice on its website expressing regret over the claim. Additionally, the network will pay $1 million in legal fees to Trump's lawyers.
“We are pleased that the parties have reached an agreement to dismiss the lawsuit under the terms of the court filing,” ABC News said in a statement.
In response to the deal, Mary Trump, a vocal critic of her uncle, took to X, formerly Twitter, and wrote Saturday night: “How many coloring books can we buy for $15 million? any more, we are doomed.”
Newsweek reached out to the Trump transition team and Mary Trump via email for comment Sunday morning.

Justice Lewis Kaplan, who presided over both Carroll cases, clarified in July 2023 that the jury's conclusion reflected specific legal definitions.
“The definition of rape in New York criminal law is much narrower than the meaning of 'rape' in common modern parlance, its definition in some dictionaries, in some federal and state criminal statutes, and elsewhere,” he said. -he writes.
The judge further noted that the jury's finding meant that Carroll failed to prove rape “in the narrow and technical sense of a particular section of New York criminal law.” However, Kaplan emphasized that this did not mean that Carroll “failed to prove that Mr. Trump 'raped' her, as many people generally understand the word 'rape.'
While it's unclear what Mary Trump meant by calling for his “conviction,” this isn't the first time she's warned people about her uncle.
In November, shortly after Trump was elected to a second term in a decisive victory over Vice President Kamala Harris, Mary Trump warned of the “dangers” ahead.
In a YouTube video titled “Understanding Trump's Shocking Victory – Mary Trump's Way Forward,” Mary Trump said: “It's a blow. I can't sugarcoat it. It's a tragic blow to to the American experience We must also remember that we have allies around the world who stand with us and who will be there for us if we need them, and we will.”
“A lot of people understand what we're going through, understand the dangers we face and understand the fight ahead of us,” she added, showing several TikTok videos of women from other world governments posting their message. support for American women.
