Sri Lankan President Dissanayake meets PM Modi, vows not to let country's territory be used for anti-India activities | News from India
Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said on Monday that his country's territory would not be used for any activity detrimental to India. He was speaking after meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi.
The two leaders held a bilateral meeting at Hyderabad House, during which Dissanayake expressed gratitude to India for helping Sri Lanka during its unprecedented economic crisis two years ago. Prime Minister Modi said India has supported Lanka through lines of credit and grants worth around $4 billion.
Prime Minister Modi said they discussed reconciliation and reconstruction in the neighboring country and expressed hope that the Sri Lankan government will respond to the aspirations of the Tamil minorities.
Dissanayake, who landed in Delhi on Sunday evening, is on a state visit to India from Sunday to Tuesday. Prime Minister Modi noted that this is President Dissanayake's first visit to India after the recently concluded presidential and parliamentary elections in Sri Lanka.
Dissanayake also met with President Droupadi Murmu. The newly elected President of Sri Lanka will attend a business event in Delhi and will later visit Bodh Gaya.
Both sides signed agreements aimed at avoiding double taxation as well as strengthening capacities and training.
Prime Minister Modi said the visit had infused a new pace and energy into bilateral relations, and they would work on a futuristic vision that would involve investment-led growth and physical, digital and energy connectivity.
They also discussed the Sampur solar power project, railway connectivity in Sri Lanka, ferry and flight services between the two countries, digital identity project and education, besides deliberating on defense pacts and work on hydrography. Dissanayake said they needed to find a lasting and lasting solution to the fishermen’s problem.
Modi highlighted the importance of maritime security, cybersecurity and counter-terrorism among the issues that will be discussed under the Colombo Security Conclave mechanism. They also discussed the Ramayana circuit and the Buddhist circuit for visits to each of their countries.
President Dissanayake's visit to India will further strengthen the multifaceted and mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries, the MEA spokesperson said on Friday.
The fact that Dissanayake's first foreign visit after taking office is to India is a testament to the importance that the new Sri Lankan president, who defeated the traditional political parties led by the political elite, attaches to this relationship .
Dissanayake is accompanied by Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath and Deputy Finance Minister Anil Jayantha Fernando. The invitation to visit New Delhi was extended by Foreign Minister S Jaishankar, who visited Colombo less than a fortnight after Dissanayake's victory. Jaishankar was the first foreign minister to visit Sri Lanka since the Dissanayake-led National People's Power (NPP) government came to power on September 23.
