President Dissanayake to Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not allow Sri Lankan territory to be used against India

Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who is currently making his first trip to India following his election victory earlier this year, has reiterated his country's stated position of not allowing its territory to be used in a manner contrary to to the security of India. regarding regional stability.

He further acknowledged India's decision to extend grant assistance to projects initially undertaken through lines of credit, thereby reducing Sri Lanka's debt burden.

President Disanayaka thanked Modi for India's support in stabilizing the Sri Lankan economy through unprecedented and multi-pronged assistance, including emergency financing and foreign exchange support worth 4 billion dollars.

He acknowledged India's crucial assistance in Sri Lanka's debt restructuring process, including as co-chair of the Official Creditors Committee (OCC), as instrumental in finalizing debt restructuring discussions in a timely manner.

He further thanked India for extending financial assistance of US$ 20.66 million to settle payments due from Sri Lanka for projects completed under existing lines of credit, thereby significantly reducing the burden of debt at a critical time.

Highlighting the close and special ties with Sri Lanka, Prime Minister Modi reiterated India's continued support to the country in times of need and in its quest for economic recovery, stability and prosperity for its people.

The leaders asked officials to finalize discussions on the bilateral memorandum of understanding on debt restructuring.

Modi welcomed Sri Lanka's support for India's bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for 2028-2029.
