TikTok Chief Executive Shou Zi Chew met with Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago on Monday, according to two people familiar with the matter, as the popular video app pins its hopes on the president-elect to save it from a looming ban in the United States.

The ByteDance-owned app is expected to be banned from the company's 170 million U.S. users if it does not divest from its Chinese parent under a law that takes effect Jan. 19, the day before the Trump's inauguration as president.

The private meeting between the two men comes as TikTok's attempts to fight the ban in court have so far failed. A U.S. appeals court has rejected a challenge to the law and a subsequent request to halt it while the company steps up its challenge at the Supreme Court.

Trump has previously said he would save the platform, aiming to preserve competition with Mark Zuckerberg's Meta, which he has criticized for allegedly censoring right-wing voices.

Speaking to reporters at his Mar-a-Lago resort, Trump reiterated that sentiment, saying he has a small hot spot for TikTok, citing its outperformance among young voters who make up the apps' core user base video during the presidential election earlier. This year.
