Trump will fight remote work deal with Biden; the union pledges to fight back
President-elect Trump and SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son discuss small business optimism and their commitment to creating 100,000 jobs in the United States.
President-elect Trump indicated Monday that he plans to delay President Biden's decision to reach a deal that would allow tens of thousands of federal workers to remain in a hybrid work arrangement with telework through 2029.
“We're talking about a friendly takeover, a friendly transition, as they like to say, it's a friendly transition, and it is,” Trump said at a news conference. “But there are two events that took place that I find very terrible.”
“The first is if people don't come back to work, don't come back to the office, they will be laid off, and someone in the Biden administration gave a five-year waiver. So that for five years, people I don’t need to come back to the office,” Trump said. “It involved 49,000 people for five years. They don't have to go. They just signed this thing. It's ridiculous. So it was like a gift to a union, and we're obviously going to go to court to stop this.”
Trump's comments come after an agreement was reached earlier this month between the largest federal workers' union, the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), and the Social Security Administration (SSA), which ” places current levels of teleworking in our national agreement until October.” 25, 2029.”

The deal, first reported by Bloomberg, affects about 42,000 Social Security employees across the country. Under the terms of the agreement, requirements for workers range from two to five days a week, the outlet reported, citing people familiar with the matter.
AFGE National President Everett Kelley responded to Trump's comments on the remote work deal with a statement that said the union supports telework “where it meets the expectations of taxpayers and the workers who use them.” serve. Telecommuting and remote work are tools that have helped the federal government increase productivity and efficiency, maintain continuity of operations, and increase disaster preparedness.
“Rumours that telecommuting and remote work at the federal level are widespread are simply false. More than half of federal employees cannot telework at all due to the nature of their jobs, only 10% of federal workers are remote, and those with a hybrid arrangement spend more than 60%. % of working hours in the office,” Kelley said.
“Collaborative agreements entered into by the federal government are binding and enforceable under law. We are confident that the new administration will meet its obligations to honor legal union contracts. If it does not, we will be prepared to do so. assert our rights,'” Kelley added.

Trump has tasked Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to lead the Department of Government Effectiveness (DOGE), which will focus on finding ways to reduce government spending and improve the effectiveness of federal initiatives.
Musk and Ramaswamy have indicated they want to end remote work and view requiring federal workers to return to the office as a way to encourage voluntary layoffs.
“Requiring federal employees to come to the office five days a week would lead to a wave of voluntary attrition that we welcome: If federal employees are unwilling to show up, American taxpayers should not pay them for the COVID-era privilege of stay home,” Musk and Ramaswamy wrote in an opinion piece published in the Wall Street Journal last month.
