Lawyer Christine Lee loses case against British MI5 over Chinese spy alert
A woman who was branded a Chinese spy by Britain's MI5 has lost her legal case against the national intelligence agency over an alert to politicians that she was an agent working for Beijing, a court ruled on Tuesday from London.
The warning was issued to lawmakers by the Speaker of the House of Commons, who said MI5 had discovered that Lee had facilitated financial donations to sitting and aspiring parliamentarians on behalf of foreign nationals based in Hong Kong and Mainland China.
Lee was born in Hong Kong and founded a company providing consulting services to Chinese migrants. She helped establish a parliamentary committee, chaired by then-opposition Labor Party MP Barry Gardiner, to discuss issues affecting the Chinese community in Britain.
Gardiner said he had received hundreds of thousands of pounds in donations from him and that his son had worked in his office.
She denied MI5's allegations and sued the spy agency for unspecified damages, arguing that the agency had acted illegally and unreasonably by labeling her a risk to the state without any prior declaration of guilt.
