Ruling party expels Jokowi | The star
The country's largest party officially expelled former President Joko Widodo after he rejected his own candidate in February's election and backed Prabowo Subianto's successful campaign to become leader of Southeast Asia's largest economy.
Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) Chairman Megawati Soekarnoputri made the decision to expel Jokowi, as the former leader is popularly known, along with his eldest son and son-in-law, according to a senior party official , Komarudin Watubun.
More than two dozen party members were also fired.
I received a direct order from the president to officially announce the layoffs, Watabun said in a video received by Bloomberg News.
While Jokowi's feud with his former party has played out publicly, the expulsion will fuel speculation about his plans as he seeks to preserve his legacy and dynasty after a decade in power.
Analysts say the ever-popular politician could form his own party or join another political group to strengthen his family's support base.
After defeating Prabowo twice in presidential elections, Jokowi supported his official rival in this year's elections, with his eldest son successfully running for Prabowo's vice-presidential post.
He also secured his influence through the election of his son-in-law as governor of North Sumatra, while several of his key former ministers are now part of Prabowos' cabinet.
The PDI-P, which supported Jokowi in two presidential campaigns, claimed he intervened in a controversial Constitutional Court ruling that paved the way for his eldest son's candidacy for vice president. Jokowi has long denied these allegations. Bloomberg
