New Delhi [India]December 17 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed India's solidarity with France following the catastrophic impact of Cyclone Chido in Mayotte.
In a message on X (formerly Twitter), Prime Minister Modi offered his condolences and affirmed India's willingness to help. “Deeply saddened by the devastation caused by Cyclone Chido in Mayotte. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. I am convinced that under the leadership of President Emmanuel Macron, France will overcome this tragedy with resilience and determination. “India stands in solidarity with France and is ready to provide all possible assistance,” he said.

Cyclone Chido, considered the most violent storm to hit Mayotte, caused significant destruction in its wake. The archipelago, located in the Indian Ocean, experienced winds exceeding 200 km/h (124 mph), which caused significant damage to homes, hospitals and government buildings. The unprecedented intensity of the cyclone took authorities by surprise.
“Everyone understands that this is a cyclone of unexpected violence,” French Prime Minister François Bayrou said during an interministerial meeting.
The toll from the cyclone is staggering, with authorities fearing the deaths could number in the thousands. According to prefect François-Xavier Bieuville, “I think there will certainly be several hundred, perhaps we will approach a thousand, or even several thousand” deaths, as reported by the Mayotte la Première channel.
Initial reports confirmed at least 11 deaths, but that figure is expected to rise as relief efforts continue. The prefect of Bieuville admitted that it remains difficult to accurately identify victims, because burials in this predominantly Muslim region take place within 24 hours, which further complicates estimates of the number of deaths.
