Velosos returns to lead the way in filing charges against recruiters

MANILA, Philippines — The return of Mary Jane Veloso to the country “will pave the way” for filing charges against his alleged recruiters, the Department of Justice (DOJ) said Wednesday.

The DOJ ultimately brought Veloso into the country earlier the same day as part of a transfer deal with Indonesia, where she was convicted and sentenced to death on drug trafficking charges.

“Veloso’s return will pave the way for filing charges against his alleged recruiters,” the DOJ said in a statement.

The DOJ added that Veloso would continue to serve his sentence in the Philippines under the transfer agreement.

Veloso was arrested in 2010 at Adisucipto International Airport in Yogyakarta after she was found in possession of more than 2.6 kilograms of heroin.

She was ultimately sentenced to death, but was spared from death row in 2015 after Philippine authorities asked then-Indonesian President Joko Widodo to allow her to testify against union members human and drug trafficking in Manila.

Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla thanked the Indonesian government for allowing Veloso's transfer without any conditions imposed.

Veloso arrived in the country on Wednesday morning. Upon arrival, she was then escorted to the Correctional Facility for Women (CIW) and placed in its custody.

Malacañang previously said that President Ferdinand “Bongbong” R. Marcos Jr. has not yet decided whether Veloso will receive executive pardon or not.
