Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Omar Ayub staged a walkout from the National Assembly on Wednesday, demanding the release of jailed party leaders, including the president founder Imran Khan, and the cessation of alleged activities. threats against party members.
At the start of the session, Deputy Speaker Syed Mir Ghulam Mustafa Shah announced the proceedings of the assembly, but problems immediately arose when PTI member Iqbal Afridi pointed out a quorum problem. The meeting was adjourned for 15 minutes due to lack of quorum.
Speaking to the media after the session, Opposition Leader Omar Ayub condemned the government's actions, saying: “We will not participate in this session until Imran Khan and PTI workers are released.” The continued threats of resignation against our members must stop.
He further accused the government of pressurizing PTI members from Punjab to resign from their seats under duress.
The opposition's withdrawal was supported by several political parties, except Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F). Ayub and his colleagues demanded the immediate release of the PTI members, warning that they would not return to the assembly until their demands were met.
Meanwhile, during the session, the absence of key ministers was also highlighted. Ayub wondered why only a state minister and a federal minister were present in the assembly. “Where are the other ministers? They should be there to answer our questions,” he added.
The walkout follows growing tensions within the National Assembly over the handling of political demands, with opposition parties pushing for the release of their leaders and greater political freedom for party members.
Imran suspends call for civil disobedience
The founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has postponed his call for a civil disobedience movement for a while, his sister said on Tuesday, as the government minister put the responsibility of creating an environment conducive to political dialogue.
Aleema Khan spoke to the media after meeting Imran Khan in Adiala jail, saying her brother had warned against asking overseas Pakistanis to suspend remittances if his two demands were not satisfied – a judicial investigation into the May 9, 2023 and November 26, 2024. incidents and the release of party members.
“Overseas Pakistanis are in touch and say they are ready to stop sending money, but PTI members have advised Imran Khan to wait, fearing damage to the country,” he said. she said, adding that Imran was focused on their concerns and was willing to wait a few more days before taking decisive action.
She said Imran was in considerable distress and would not stop until his demands were met. “If these demands are not met, Imran Khan will urge overseas Pakistanis to stop sending remittances to the country,” Allema Khan told media.
Earlier this month, the PTI founder had threatened to launch a civil disobedience movement from December 14 in a message on his handle X. He also announced the creation of a five-member committee to negotiate with the federal government on its two requests.
However, the government has rejected the prospect of negotiations with the PTI amid the threat of a civil disobedience movement. During the National Assembly session, several ministers urged the PTI to create an enabling environment for dialogue and withdraw the call for civil disobedience.
“Talks cannot take place at gunpoint,” Defense Minister Khawaja Asif told the National Assembly. He also called the PTI negotiating committee “meaningless”, arguing that without sincerity, such efforts were in vain. Asif also criticized the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government for its marches on Islamabad.
PTI's Sher Afzal Marwat stressed the need for dialogue and national unity to help bring the country out of the current crisis. He stressed the importance of resolving the current chaotic situation and learning from past mistakes.
Marwat stressed that any negotiation could only succeed if political forces came together with a clear set of terms of reference (TOR). Furthermore, he raised concerns over security issues in his constituency and urged the government to take action against violators.
Responding to the point of order raised by Marwat, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's political advisor Rana Sanaullah reiterated the government's willingness to negotiate, but stressed that the PTI should engage with the government through formal channels.
“The PTI must approach the President’s office if it wants a political dialogue,” Rana said. “The President's office is a neutral place for each party and the PTI dialogue committee must convey a serious message to initiate talks,” he added.
He said a healthy dialogue between the opposition and Treasury MPs was vital for a strong political and democratic system. He expressed hope that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif would take allied parties into confidence if the PTI showed its seriousness in conducting political dialogue.
Also responding to Marwat's point of order, Khawaja Asif said formal negotiations between the government and the PTI were yet to begin and stressed the need for serious efforts or practical steps by the PTI to begin the dialogue with the government.
“No formal steps have yet been taken to begin negotiations,” he said. He urged PTI lawmakers to prioritize their constitutional obligations ahead of political affiliations. “Love and harmony grow through goodwill, not through threats,” he said, warning that an aggressive tone would only invite bitterness.
He called for an environment of change that fosters goodwill and positivity. “Talks cannot progress alongside contradictions and threats. A call for civil disobedience has been made again; they can implement it and then we can talk,” he added.
During the session, PTI lawmakers also expressed their willingness to talk with the government, but insisted they would not “beg” for dialogue. They also condemned the government's crackdown on PTI protesters in Islamabad on November 26.
Earlier on Tuesday, PTI leader and former National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser had said he was under pressure to resign and was informed that the current president was informed about accepting his resignation once submitted.
His remarks came during a session of the National Assembly, chaired by President Ayaz Sadiq, during which Qaiser criticized the current situation, alleging harassment of Members of the National Assembly (MNAs).
Asad Qaiser asked under which law the MPs were being harassed, saying the members felt threatened by the “incumbent government” and the administration.
He further claimed that searches were being conducted at the homes of PTI members in Punjab and warned that if resignations were forced, the assembly would not be able to function. He also criticized the lack of progress by a special committee formed to address these concerns.
