Trump chooses Herschel Walker as ambassador to Bahamas

President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday named Herschel Walker, who ran unsuccessfully for a Georgia Senate seat in 2022, as his choice for U.S. ambassador to the Bahamas.

Herschel spent decades serving as an ambassador to our nations youth, our men and women in the military, and athletes at home and abroad, Trump wrote on his social media platform, TruthSocial.

Walker, a Heisman Trophy winner at the University of Georgia before playing in the NFL, waged a tumultuous Senate campaign two years ago as a Republican candidate in his home state of Georgia, ultimately losing to Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock in a runoff.

NBC News reported in 2022 that Walker's financial problems, micromanagement, and evasiveness about his past all contributed to problems during his candidacy. His campaign was rocked just weeks before the election when an explosive report said Walker, a staunch anti-abortion candidate, paid for a woman's abortion in 2009.

Trump, a longtime friend of Walkers who encouraged him to run for a Senate seat, said at the time that Walker was being maligned and slandered. In a 2022 interview with NBC News, Walker admitted to giving a $700 check to an ex-partner, but denied knowing it was an abortion.

Walker, who campaigned with Trump in the 2024 presidential election, must be confirmed by a simple majority in the Senate for the ambassadorship. Republicans will take control of the House early next month.

Trump has named almost all of his Cabinet picks, a handful of which have attracted the attention of some Senate Republicans.
