Donald Trump sends new directive to Senate Republicans

Donald Trump sends new directive to Senate Republicans

What's new

President-elect Donald Trump issued a new directive to Senate Republicans on Tuesday evening, saying on his social media platform Truth Social: “To all Senate Republicans: NO AGREEMENT WITH DEMOCRATS TO EXPERIENCE NOMINATIONS AT THE END OF THIS CONGRESSION . I won the biggest mandate. 129 years from now, I will make my Highly Qualified Person nominations in January when I take my oath of office.

Why it matters

Most of Trump's nominees require Senate confirmation, and some controversial Cabinet picks, like Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for secretary of Health and Human Services and Pete Hegseth for secretary of Defense, have worked behind the scenes to build support from lawmakers.

Hegseth and Kennedy faced increased scrutiny after Trump's first nominee for attorney general, former Republican U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida, withdrew from consideration in due to allegations of drug use and sexual misconduct.

Newsweek reached out to the Trump transition team via email Tuesday evening for comment.

Hegseth recently faced backlash after being accused of drinking on the job by his former colleagues at Fox News, the Washington Post reported. Hegseth partially admitted to these accusations during an interview on the Megyn Kelly Show: “I never had a drinking problem.” Hegseth also vowed not to drink if he wins Senate confirmation.

The former Fox host faces an uphill battle, including with Republican Sen. Joni Ernst, who has said she supports Hegseth's vetting process but has not indicated whether she still supports it.

Kennedy has long been skeptical of vaccines and claims they can cause autism in children, a theory that has been proven inaccurate by scientists.

Trump also named Kash Patel as the next director of the FBI and Tulsi Gabbard as head of national intelligence.

What people say

Tuesday night on CNN, Republican U.S. Sen. Ted Budd of North Carolina said Trump's nominees were “going to be confirmed.”

“I think they're all confirmed, that's true. I had great meetings with them. I asked all the tough questions. I said, 'Hey, I think the Democrats are going to ask this question, tell me how you “I'm looking at these questions. So I'll ask Bobby Kennedy some tough questions tomorrow,” Budd said, mentioning that he planned to ask RFK Jr. about agriculture.

Democratic Sen. John Fetterman posted Tuesday on X, formerly Twitter: “I believe it is appropriate and the responsibility of a United States Senator to have a conversation with President-elect Trump's nominees. That's why I met Elise Stefanik and Pete Hegseth, precisely. wrapped up with Tulsi Gabbard and looking forward to meeting more people soon.

Fetterman added: “My votes will come from an open mind and informed opinion after having a conversation with them. It's not controversial, it's my job.”

Republican U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas joked Tuesday during an appearance on CNBC that Democratic U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota was going to vote for all of Trump's nominees. Klobuchar laughed and replied, “Stop it.” She added: “Last time, I voted for half of his Cabinet nominees because I carefully considered each of them and made decisions. And I just don't think you should give to a president a blank slate with empty power when in fact we (senators) are supposed to have advice and consent and take the oath we ourselves take to protect the Constitution.”

What happens next

The candidates continue to meet with senators this week as Trump's Inauguration Day is Jan. 20 at the U.S. Capitol.
