Ministers have been accused of presiding over a day of shame for the Labor government after announcing that up to 3.8 million women affected by pension age changes will not receive compensation.

Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall rejected calls for those affected to receive between 1,000 and 2,950 each, while saying she understood their dissatisfaction.

I know there are women born in the 1950s who want and deserve a better life. They worked hard to hold gainful employment and raise their families, she said.

She promised the Government would protect the pension triple lock, reduce NHS waiting lists and provide the jobs, homes and opportunities your families need to build a better life.

She insisted that refusing compensation was the right and fair decision as most women knew the state pension age was increasing, sending letters earlier would have made no difference to most and the proposed compensation system is not fair and does not provide value for taxpayers' money.

But the Liberal Democrats said it was a day of shame for the government.

And Labor MP Brian Leishman said he was dismayed by the decision. Lashing out at his own government, he said the women concerned did not need empty statements. What they need is justice.

Raising the retirement age for women from 60 to 65 has sparked controversy, after millions of people claimed they had not been properly informed. Many say they have been forced to change their retirement plans as a result.

Campaigners say up to 3.8 million women born in the 1950s are affected.

The changes sparked the creation of campaign group Waspi, which represents women against inequality in state pensions. They have spent years demanding compensation for the financial consequences they say they suffered.

Earlier this year, the Parliamentary and Health Services Ombudsman (PHSO) published the findings of its five-year investigation into the issue. in a damning assessment of the Department for Work and Pensions' (DWP) handling of the issue, warned of poor administration.

The PHSO report admits that poor communication from the DWP has caused some women to lose the opportunity to make informed decisions, although it makes clear that it does not believe this results in direct financial loss.

However, it ruled that the women affected were entitled to compensation generally between 1,000 and 2,950 each.
