Boat accident in Mumbai: 13 dead, Prime Minister Modi declares ex gratia Rs. 1,000,000. 2 million
Thirteen people lost their lives in Mumbai on Wednesday, December 28, when a passenger ferry, Neel Kamal, collided with an Indian Navy craft undergoing engine testing and capsized while heading towards Elephanta Island from India Gate.
Among the victims were 10 civilians and 3 members of the Navy, including 2 children, 7 men and 4 women. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed that 101 passengers had been rescued and were receiving medical treatment at nearby jetties and hospitals.
The accident of a passenger boat belonging to the Neelkamal company in the Arabian Sea near Mumbai is deeply tragic and unfortunate.
According to information received up to 7:30 p.m., 101 passengers were rescued safely.

The accident occurred near Jawahar Dweep, also known as Butcher Island, around 4 p.m. when the Navy craft reportedly lost control due to an engine malfunction and rammed the ferry.
In a swift response, the Indian Navy launched a massive rescue operation alongside the maritime police and coast guard, deploying 11 naval craft, 3 maritime police boats and 1 coast guard vessel. Personnel of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) also took part in the rescue.
The Navy released a statement acknowledging the loss of control of its aircraft during testing, which caused the collision.
Along with the Prime Minister's relief, Chief Minister Fadnavis announced Rs 5 lakh from the state relief fund for the families of those who lost their lives. Injured survivors will receive 50,000 euros in financial aid.
Eyewitness accounts from rescue boat operators revealed the distressing nature of the accident. Mumbai Port Trust driver Arif Bamane described the scene as tragic and chaotic, with survivors screaming for help. Another driver, Iqbal Gothekar, said survivors waved frantically in their distress.
An FIR was lodged at the Colaba police station by a survivor, Natharam Chaudhary, under Cr. 283/24, invoking sections 106(1), 125(a)(b), 282 and 324(3)(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The case includes charges against the driver of the Navy craft and others found responsible for the incident.
