Erdogan calls to prevent Syria from becoming a hotbed of terrorism

ANKARA | TASS | Syria must not turn into a hotbed of terrorism and the fight against the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK, banned in Turkey) and the Islamic State terrorist group (IS, banned in Russia) must continue, the president said Turkish Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

“As for Syria, we must prevent the country from becoming a hotbed of terrorism. The fight against ISIS and the PKK and its affiliated organizations was one of the main issues we discussed today,” he stressed during a press conference following his interview with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.

“Turkey is the only country and ally that defeated these two terrorist organizations. We certainly will not allow these organizations to thrive again. The fight must continue,” Erdogan added.

The Turkish leader stressed that “the Syrian people will not be able to bear the heavy burden alone” of having to rebuild the country and strengthen national security. “Syria's neighbors, friends and fraternal nations should quickly begin to take action with substantial support from the European Union and international organizations. I say this very clearly today. Unfortunately, the international community has not provided enough support to the Syrian people as they have suffered violence over the past 13 years. Today, the opportunity has arisen to compensate for this lack of assistance,” Erdogan said.

According to him, the reconstruction of Syria will require great support. That said, Turkey “has reopened its embassy in Damascus”. Ankara, in Erdogan's words, “will continue to support its Syrian brothers.”
