Britain's Starmer tells Trump to stand with Ukraine – POLITICO

The UK has long been a strong supporter of Ukraine. Starmer was among those lobbying the Biden administration to allow Ukraine to use British-made missiles within Russian borders.

Trump and Starmer discussed their shared ambition to strengthen the close and historic relationship between the United Kingdom and the United States, a spokesperson for Number 10 Downing Street said of the call.

Starmer began by congratulating Trump on his team's recent appointments. The president-elect responded by warmly recounting his meeting with the Prince of Wales, Prince William, in Paris earlier this month, Number 10 said.

In an interview with the Sun newspaper on Tuesday, Starmer said he hoped to restart negotiations with the new US administration over a trade deal after incumbent President Joe Biden put negotiations on ice two years ago.

During their call, the leaders said they looked forward to meeting again as soon as possible.

Britain's I newspaper reported on Wednesday that Starmer could visit the United States as early as February.

The two men first met in September for a two-hour dinner in New York, as Starmer and his party continued a charm offensive with the president-elect and his allies in the run-up to the US election.

Starmer's call with Trump came as a key political rival, Nigel Farage, discussed his own friendship with Trump and his government efficiency pick, Elon Musk, who has repeatedly disparaged Starmer and spoken warmly of the Farage's right-wing Reform UK party.
