PM Modi speaks with King Charles III; both reaffirm their commitment to a comprehensive strategic partnership between India and the United Kingdom
They exchanged views on the Commonwealth of Nations and the recently concluded Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Samoa, the Prime Minister's Office added.
Discussions were also held on a number of topics of mutual interest, including climate action and sustainability. The Prime Minister expressed appreciation for His Majesty's sustained advocacy and initiatives on these issues and briefed him on the multiple initiatives undertaken by India, the Prime Minister's Office said.
They both exchanged greetings on the upcoming festive occasions of Christmas and New Year. Prime Minister Modi conveyed his best wishes to the King for his good health and well-being.
India and the United Kingdom decided on a new transformational comprehensive strategic partnership during the virtual India-UK summit between Prime Minister Modi and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on May 4, 2021. They also agreed to a 2030 roadmap to guide cooperation for the next 10 years.
Since then, several meetings have taken place at the highest levels of both governments to review progress on the 2030 Roadmap.
British Foreign Secretary David Lammy visited New Delhi on July 24, 2024 and held numerous discussions with Foreign Minister S Jaishankar. Reviewing the 2030 Roadmap, they expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far and agreed to consider its renewal, with the aim of increased ambition in bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
The two sides also decided to further intensify bilateral collaboration in the priority areas of trade and investment, defense and security, migration and mobility, IT/AI/technology areas, S&T, innovation, climate and green energy.
In New Delhi, the British Foreign Secretary called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and met National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval.
Prime Minister Modi welcomed the desire to conclude a mutually beneficial free trade agreement (FTA). He also welcomed the agreement between the two sides to launch a Technology Security Initiative (TSI) focused on new and emerging technologies.
The UK-India ITS encompasses crucial sectors from critical minerals and semiconductors to artificial intelligence and quantum computing. The aim is to place greater emphasis on collaboration in critical and emerging technologies (CET) in priority sectors. The TSI will strengthen existing collaborative efforts in various technologies, expand the mandates of existing mechanisms, and establish new cooperation mechanisms.
The initiative is coordinated by the National Security Advisors (NSA) of the two countries through existing and new dialogues. At the same time, a bilateral mechanism led by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs and the British government will promote trade in critical and emerging technologies.
