PTI civil disobedience: Imran warns 1st phase to begin on Sunday if 'legitimate demands' not met – Pakistan
PTI founder Imran Khan on Thursday warned that the first phase of the party's civil disobedience movement boycotting remittances would begin from December 22 if its legitimate demands were not met by the government.
Earlier this month, the former prime minister warned of a civil disobedience movement from December 14 if his demands for the release of political prisoners facing trial and the formation of a judicial commission to investigating the events of May 9, 2023 and November 26 were satisfied. not satisfied.
His sister Aleema Khanum had said on Tuesday that Imran had warned that he would ask overseas Pakistanis to suspend remittances if the government did not respond to his demands. PTI lawyer Chaudhry Faisal Hussain said a day ago that Imran had asked the party leadership to wait until Sunday before continuing the campaign.
A statement posted today on the X account of the incarcerated ex-prime ministers shared Imran's important message.
Reiterating these demands, the statement said the first phase including boycott of remittances would begin from Sunday if Imrans' demands were not met.
We will appeal to Pakistanis living abroad to make the situation in Pakistan clear to you; democracy, the justice system and the media have been stifled, and a period of oppression and fascism is underway. This is why we urge you to start boycotting remittances.
The statement said the party's offer to negotiate was ridiculed and presented as if the PTI had capitulated. He added that the offer of talks and delay of the civil disobedience movement was made in the broader national interest.
If the government shows no interest, we will not impose negotiations on it. Our offer should never be taken as a sign of our weakness. If the government still wants to prevent the civil disobedience movement, it must contact us about our two demands or convince us that these demands are unconstitutional and cannot be met.
I invited a negotiating team to a prison meeting and provided their names. Now we will see if the government allows them to meet me or not, the statement said.
After Imran's arrest on May 9, 2023, at the premises of the Islamabad High Court, riots broke out across the country and lasted for at least 24 hours. At least 10 people lost their lives and hundreds were injured, while around 40 public buildings and military installations were damaged.
The state then launched a severe crackdown on his party, arresting thousands of PTI workers and almost all of its top leaders, many of whom still face prosecution on serious charges.
Meanwhile, a day of fierce fighting between security forces and PTI protesters in the federal capital last month ended with a hasty withdrawal of senior party leaders and supporters from the red zone in the early hours of Nov. 27, ending his final nationwide appeal. protests.
The PTI claimed that at least 12 party supporters died in Islamabad following firing by security forces. The government has repeatedly refuted the allegations, saying security personnel were deployed without live ammunition.
The threat of a reduction in remittances follows the current account recording a fourth consecutive surplus of $729 million in November, the second highest surplus since July 2013, while the surplus for first five months of the current fiscal year was approaching a billion dollars.
Remittances are expected to increase by $5 billion by the end of the current fiscal year, with the government forecasting a total of $35 billion for FY25, compared to just over $30 billion for the exercise 24.
Bankers and currency experts attribute the rise in remittances primarily to a crackdown on illegal foreign exchange activities, which has forced remittance senders to use banks and other legal channels to send their money.
