Xi stresses adherence to 'one country, two systems' as Macao SAR celebrates silver jubilee
In a televised ceremony at a major Macau sports stadium, Xi swore in Sam Hou Fai, a 62-year-old former judge, as chief executive of the Macau Special Administrative Region (SAR) for a sixth term. Sam's team, comprising top SAR government officials, also took the oath of office before Xi.
After the inauguration, Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, addressed an audience of more than 1,000 people in the stadium.
Xi said Macao's great achievements since its handover have proven to the world that “one country, two systems” has important institutional strengths and immense vitality.
Macau and its neighbor Hong Kong are the two SARs of China governed by the “one country, two systems” policy since China resumed exercise of sovereignty over these regions after long periods of Portuguese and British rule. This policy allows them to maintain their capitalist systems and lifestyles within socialist China.
