INDEF Research: Indonesia has a strategic dynamic for downstream copper
NATIONAL NEWS – Indonesia is at a strategic moment to become a global player in downstream copper. The Institute for Development of Economics and Finance (INDEF) notes that the downstream copper ecosystem in Indonesia is growing significantly, supported by the large potential of national copper reserves and the trend of global demand for low-carbon technologies.
INDEF Executive Director Esther Sri Astuti said Indonesia has about 3 percent of the world's total copper reserves, equivalent to 24,000 tonnes. “On par with China and above countries like Kazakhstan, Zambia and Canada. The remaining 22 percent of the world's reserves are distributed among various other countries. “Even though it does not have the largest reserves, Indonesia is strategically positioned to develop an integrated and sustainable copper industry,” Esther said.
Growing global demand for copper, especially for low-carbon technologies such as electric vehicles, renewable energy and infrastructure digitalization, opens up great opportunities for Indonesia. “This trend provides an opportunity to strengthen the downstream copper sector, through the processing of ore into concentrate, through to the production of electrical cables and electric vehicle components, all of which have a significant impact on the economy national,” Esther said.
The implementation of policies such as the Minerals and Coal Act has encouraged the formation of a strong supply chain between upstream and downstream sectors. “Policies that support sustainability and technological innovation are key to the transformation of Indonesia’s copper industry. “This industry not only increases the value of exports, but also creates hundreds of thousands of new jobs and makes a significant contribution to the national GDP,” Esther added.
Real progress in downstream copper can be seen since the construction of the PT Freeport Indonesia smelter in the JIIPE Special Economic Zone (KEK), Gresik, East Java. This smelter with a capacity of 1.7 million tonnes of concentrate per year was inaugurated by then President Joko Widodo on September 23, 2024, becoming the largest single-lane copper refining facility in the world. This smelter is the largest single-line copper refining facility in the world, capable of producing approximately 600,000 to 700,000 tonnes of copper cathode per year.
Apart from this, PT Amman Mineral Internasional is also building a smelter and precious metal refining facilities in West Sumbawa Regency, NTB.
Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Bahlil Lahadalia, highlighted the positive impact of the construction of a smelter. “Employment opportunities are clear, state revenues have also increased. “If an entrepreneur holding a mining permit does not build a smelter, his permit must be reviewed,” Bahlil stressed.
