Turkish President Erdogan pledges Ankara's support for Syrian transition and regional stability
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday reaffirmed his country's commitment to helping Syria during its transition process following the collapse of Bashar al-Assad's regime earlier this month.
“We are helping the Syrian people manage the transition process smoothly, without any setbacks along the way,” Erdogan told reporters on his flight back from Cairo, where he participated in the 11th D-8 summit on Thursday.
He also announced that Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan would soon visit Syria to work on the “new structure” to be established in the country.
“If Syria establishes a truly stable structure with this new formation, it will, in my opinion, occupy a very strong position in the Islamic world,” he added.
Addressing pressing issues such as energy shortages and security concerns in the neighboring country, Erdogan pledged to quickly resolve Syria's energy problems and strengthen trade relations with Damascus and Iraq.
“We will intensify our trade relations with Iraq and Syria. This will bring new impetus to Syria and Trkiye in all respects,” he noted.
Erdogan also addressed regional security concerns, calling for consistency in how Western countries deal with terrorist groups.
“Just as Daesh/IS cannot organize protests in the streets and squares of Western countries, neither should the PKK and its affiliates,” he said.
Highlighting the PKK's diminished influence, Erdogan said the terrorist group and organizations affiliated with it have “reached the end of their lifespan.”
On broader geopolitical issues, Erdogan urged Western countries, particularly the United States, to take action against Israel's occupation of Syrian territories.
“We must declare loud and clear that the occupation of Syrian territories by Israel is unacceptable,” he said.
Erdogan also highlighted atrocities committed at Sednaya prison near Damascus under Assad's rule as emblematic of his regime's abuses.
“The atrocities, extrajudicial executions and injustices that reign there are among the most painful images of the reality (under the) Baath regime,” he declared, pledging to “seek that those responsible for these crimes be held accountable under international law.”
